My friends, we’ve all lived through a grueling run-up to the 2024 presidential election with emotions running high. While some businesses carried on the day after the results came in, barely addressing how current events may mentally impact their teams, I will acknowledge the elephant in the room.

You probably started your business to have the flexibility and freedom to take care of yourself and your loved ones. You have a right to take a time out when you need it. A good leader knows that taking time to care for yourself first will enable you to better care for others and your business. So, I encourage you to do so.

  • Take a personal day or two if you need it. The work will be there when you get back.
  • Know that others may be in the same boat and may not be interested in seeing your email pitches, products or services right now.
  • Unplug from your devices, especially your social streams and news sites.
  • Take time to self-reflect, acknowledge and validate your feelings, whether by daydreaming, resting, meditating, journaling or going for a walk.
  • Seek community. Connect with others who may be feeling the same.
  • No matter what, know you are doing the best you can do right now. The sun will rise tomorrow, and there will be another opportunity to do what you want, need or have to do.
  • And if you need help – seek professional support.

On every airline flight you take, they tell you in the event of an emergency, put your oxygen mask on first before you take of anything or anyone else. That applies in life, too. And remember, breathe.
